Will diesel engines be saved?

Bosch GmbH said they have successfully managed to develop an exhaust system that can cut emissions to a 10th of legal limits and thus help in avoiding the potential end of diesel technology. This news has been very well received among the vast variety of motorists who have thus far enjoyed diesel fuel efficiency and its performance.

Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of Robert Bosch GmbH, Volkmar Denner said that this breakthrough offers the opportunity for diesel debate to switch to a new path, and hopefully, bring it to a close. He also said that their new process optimizes exhaust temperatures and slashes the dangerous nitrogen oxide(NOx) emissions. This system also keeps emissions stable at cold temperatures, Volkmar said.

The number of different steps was implemented in systems’ making:

  • 2.0L engines being brought down to 1.7L
  • The turbocharger has been made to be more responsive

thereby improving low-end torque behavior

  • Exhaust gas has been tweaked to increase the temperature of the catalyst

as quickly as possible upon engine startup

The result is a complete engine that emits extremely low levels of NOx per km even under worst conditions.

“With this new exhaust technology, blanket driving bans in the centers of the world’s major cities will no longer be an issue. Why? Because we now have the technology to resolve the problem of nitrogen oxides in road traffic. The system will be for new diesel cars and can’t be retrofitted”, a company spokesman said.

The company also invited press under dozens of journalists to take a test drive through Stuttgart with a brand new Volkswagen Golf mk7 diesel fitted with new system and record NOx emissions in densely packed city center’ traffic. The results were inspiring, leaving emissions under lowest levels measured ever. The German company also said that this new tech could be incorporated into diesel engines immediately, and would have no negative impact on fuel economy.

Bosch engineers achieved all of this by just refining existing technologies without any additional components which would raise the costs.

This indeed poked an interest in a vast variety of car professionals and enthusiasts all around the world, the ones that prefer diesels as well as the ones true to alternative fuels.

Even with these ground-breaking advancements in diesel technology, the diesel engine has yet to reach its full potential. Bosch now aims also to use artificial intelligence(AI) to boost development further. It will be just another step toward the ultimate goal - a combustion engine that will have no impact on ambient air(with the exception of CO2). That being said, many will agree that there are limitless possibilities to what a man’s hand can genuinely do and achieve.
