Back in my list of great F2P games I mentioned that CCG's tactics games will have their own list. And here we are, after the MOBA like games list, the one for the best free CCG games. Now before the list begins, a few notes:
This list is exclusively free games.
While I was debating putting Hearthstone on here, in the end, my opinion it has gone to the negatives. There are plenty of reasons for that, but I will keep them to myself(to be used in a future article).
Now, on to the list!
What happens when you mix some Hearthstone, some Scrolls and give it the delightful style and writing of Dofus and Wakfu? You get Krosmaga. Easy to grasp, plenty of strategic options, but there is a reason, why it's the lowest on the list. After a while (like say 10 hours or so in) you will get a steep grind wall that will require paying if you don't have several free months to climb it.
Still, for a quick burst, it is pretty great.
4. Star Realms
What this game lacks in flair, it makes up with solid gameplay. A digital version of a deck building game, in Star Realms you take turns buying and selling ships, all so you can gather an armada to destroy your opponent. And even though there are screen shattering effects, that feeling when you win is still present and strong.
It's not new for a CCG to have a board, but in this one, you and your opponent make your board! That's right, not only do you need to be smart about summoning minions, you should also be smart about how you make your side of the board. The biggest plus this game has is just the amount of singleplayer content it contains. For puzzles to campaigns and bosses. Personally, I have 10 hours and not once did I resorted to going on ranked and such. I'm still in awe that this all is free.
No matter how good you build your deck unless you play the pieces right, it won't matter much. This is the lesson you will learn when you play Duelyst. A mix of a CCG and a tactics game, each piece is a unit you can move on a board, to attack or protect your captain piece. Couple that with some great pixel art, weekly bosses, and plenty of challenges, Duelyst is one of the better CCG games that are out there.
It was not enough for CD Project Red to create one of the greatest RPG series with The Witcher, but also they had to include one of most addictive mini-games with Gwent. And, we got (though in beta technically) a stand-alone version. With the simple goal of just having a higher number than your opponent at the end of the turn, and the number of cards that can change the flow of combat is vast, and the quickness that matches end makes Gwent the best current CCG on the free to play market!
